The sizes it makes
- 35 x 45 mm, the UK passport size and a common size on Indian forms: 413 x 531 pixels at 300 DPI.
- 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), for US passports and for Indian passports applied for at an embassy: 600 x 600 pixels.
- 50 x 70 mm, for Canadian passports: 591 x 827 pixels.
In the tool, each size links to the government page it was checked against. Authorities also set rules for head size, background and expression, and they decide whether a photo is accepted.

Sheets are JPEG at quality 92 with 300 DPI written into the file. Where photos fit with a 2 mm gap, thin grey cut lines are drawn around each copy; 2 x 2 in photos fill a 4 x 6 in sheet edge to edge. Making a 4 x 6 in sheet took about 509 ms here. Timings: one thread of WebAssembly on Node v22.23.4, Intel(R) Xeon(R) Processor @ 2.10GHz, 2 cores, measured 2026-10-31. Other devices will differ.
Steps
- Choose the photo size and the paper you will print on.
- Drop a photo of yourself taken against a plain light wall.
- In the framing box, fit your face inside the oval with a little space above your head, then press Apply.
- Download the single photo for an online form, or a print sheet as JPG or PDF.
Printing at the right size
A 4 x 6 inch sheet holds 8 copies of a 35 x 45 mm photo, or 6 copies of a 2 x 2 inch photo. An A4 sheet holds 36 and 20. Photo shops print 4 x 6 inches cheaply. At home, print the PDF on A4 with the scale set to Actual size or 100%. Fit to page shrinks the photos and they will be the wrong size.
The JPG sheet has 300 DPI written into it, but some print apps ignore that and scale anyway. The PDF carries the exact page size, so printing it at Actual size gives photos of the right size.
Taking a photo that passes
- Stand about a metre in front of a plain white or light grey wall.
- Use even light from the front, with no shadows on your face or behind you.
- Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed.
- Take off glasses if they reflect light, and keep hair away from your eyes.
What this tool does not do
It crops, sizes and prints. It does not remove or replace the background, smooth skin or check your photo against biometric rules. If your wall is not plain, take the photo again somewhere else. That is quicker than editing, and authorities can reject edited photos.
Questions
Which size do I need for an Indian passport?
In India the photo is taken at the Passport Seva Kendra. Indian embassies abroad ask for 2 x 2 inches on a white background, per the embassy page linked above.
Can I use the photo for a visa?
Many visas use 35 x 45 mm or 2 x 2 inches, but rules differ. Check the size, background and head size the visa page asks for.
Why does the sheet have thin grey lines?
They are cut guides around each copy. When 2 x 2 inch photos fill a 4 x 6 inch sheet edge to edge, there is no room for lines, so cut along the photo edges.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The cropping and the sheet are made in your browser.
